Overview

The Human Metabolic Research Unit (HMRU) is dedicated to advancing human nutrition and metabolism research. We provide the expertise, equipment and clinical resources necessary to support studies in metabolism, dietetics, clinical chemistry, reproductive physiology, human performance and body composition. Our 3,829-square-foot facility is designed for comprehensive human research, featuring specialized laboratories for exercise physiology, body composition analysis and biomedical procedures.

We also offer a range of clinical procedures, including venipuncture, oral glucose tolerance testing, fat and muscle biopsies, and ultrasounds, as well as a fully equipped metabolic kitchen and dining area to support controlled dietary studies.

Our nutritional chemistry laboratory offers state-of-the-art analytical techniques to assess nutritional and biochemical biomarkers, supporting research both within DNS and beyond. Through precision nutrition, metabolic research and cutting-edge methodologies, the HMRU plays a vital role in shaping the future of nutrition science.

Our services and facilities are available to researchers across Cornell, providing the infrastructure necessary to conduct high-quality human studies.

Facilities

The Metabolic Kitchen is equipped for the design of all manners of meal preparation. The kitchen and food storage area are fully equipped and suitable for controlled feeding studies. The dining room contains a dining area that can serve up to 24 research participants.

Mandy Bates, the food labs manager, oversees the HMRU research kitchen and dining area, ensuring food safety compliance, coordinating facility use, and assisting faculty in developing metabolic research menus tailored to specific study requirements.

The Nell I. Mondy Laboratory is well-equipped for the assessment of all aspects of physical performance. The lab contains facilities to test energy expenditure and oxygen consumption by indirect calorimetry.

The Body Composition Laboratory contains instruments to assess body fat, fat-free mass and bone mineral content by densitometry and anthropometry, with examination rooms, a Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometer (DXA), bioelectrical impedance analysis and Bod-Pod. Anthropometric measurements are also available.

We offer a range of clinical procedures, including venipuncture, blood glucose point of care testing, hemoglobin point of care testing, fat and muscle biopsies, ultrasounds, specimen collection and more.

Directions

The HMRU is located on the second floor of the West Wing of Martha Van Rensselaer (MVR) Hall West at Cornell University. Your research coordinator will make a parking reservation for you in the Forest Home Garage.
