We are delighted to have you join us in the Division of Nutritional Sciences (DNS)!

DNS is home to three majors: Nutritional Sciences (NS), Human Biology, Health, and Society (HBHS), and Global and Public Health Sciences (GPHS), as well as students in a Biological Sciences concentration in Human Nutrition and several minor fields at Cornell. Our programs include students from three Colleges. Each year we welcome approximately 200 new undergraduate students to join our majors.

Please look out for information on admitted student events from your College (College of Agriculture and Life Sciences or Human Ecology).

Incoming first years and transfer students(*) to Cornell will pre-enroll for Fall 2024 courses between July 22 – 25. This is your first (not only!) opportunity to get a spot in your preferred fall courses. You will be able to add/adjust once the Add period begins for First Years on Friday, August 23 at 9:00am.

To help you choose and get into in fall courses, advisors will be available the week of pre-enrollment through the following offerings:

  1. Virtual Pre-Enroll Information Session:
  2. Open drop-in virtual office hours with DNS Student Services professional staff advisors and student advisors on July 17, 18, and 19. You will be put into a waiting room and invited in in the order you arrive. Links and detailed hours will be available in July.
  3. 15-minute one-on-one appointments with DNS Student Services on July 17, 18, 19, and 22. The link to book appointments will first be available during the Virtual Pre-Enroll Information Session on July 15. Please note that these appointments will be available to current CALS students in GPHS or NS and current CHE students planning to major in GPHS, HBHS, or NS. If you are not a current DNS student, please make an appointment after July pre-enrollment.

*Transfer students: Incoming transfer students are encouraged to reach out to DNS Student Services to schedule an advising appointment to discuss Fall enrollment.

DNS will be holding a required session for Fall 2024 Orientation:

Friday, August 23 1:30pm-3:30pm in 200 Baker Laboratory

You will receive more information via email, so be sure to check your inbox regularly! There will also be many other Orientation events for new students once you arrive on campus; keep an eye on the Orientation pages for incoming students for developing details.

You can view your major requirements on the DNS Majors page to start planning out your schedule (keeping in mind that it can change during Add/Drop!). Additionally, all incoming first year and transfer students into DNS will be automatically enrolled in the intro course to their respective majors, (NS 1400 for HBHS, NS 1150 for NS, and NS 1600 for GPHS).

Students enroll for classes online using the Student Center. There are two class registration periods each semester at Cornell: Pre-Enrollment, which occurs in July for incoming students, and Add/Drop, which occurs in August for all students. Please see the University Registrar's Key Dates and their Guide to Enrollment for detailed information.

Yes, all first-year students in DNS are assigned a professional staff advisor in Student Services. You will get to meet the team of DNS professional staff advisors virtually over the summer (July 15, more information above) during the events surrounding pre-enroll for fall courses. You will later have an opportunity to meet with your assigned staff advisor and student peer advisor, as well as DNS faculty, at Orientation in August. These individuals are all part of your Advising Support Network, a larger group of people at Cornell who will help guide your undergraduate experience and assist you with thinking about what opportunities will be most valuable to help you reach your goals at Cornell and beyond.
