Collaboration with corporate partners

We collaborate with a wide range of external organizations through lectures, design challenges, and project reviews. Our partnerships span diverse sectors, from healthcare and workplace strategy to fashion innovation and education, providing our students with real-world insights and opportunities to apply their skills in meaningful ways.
The Cornell Institute for Healthy Futures (CIHF) is the first academic center in the U.S. to unite health, hospitality, and design. Through this innovative platform, we contribute to improving service delivery across healthcare, wellness, and senior living environments.
These partnerships foster innovation, expand professional networks, and prepare students to lead in a rapidly evolving design landscape.

Extension + Outreach Projects

A sampling of our faculty's engagement in New York state.

Faculty from HCD are partnering with the medical community to improve patient sleep in clinical settings. Rana Zadeh, in collaboration with the Weill Cornell Center for Sleep Medicine and CUNY/Hunter College of Nursing, has conducted systematic reviews and developed educational materials for nurses and residents. These efforts aim to enhance sleep quality in clinical environments across New York State, including palliative care units, nursing facilities, and hospitals, without relying on pharmacological interventions.

Gary Evans has held workshops for Head Start families across New York State, Golden Opportunities workshops for retired teachers in the Ithaca School District, and in-service workshops for the Madison County Head Start program.

Nancy Wells’ school garden study involved county Extension educators in nutrition, youth development, and horticulture in approximately 30 counties in four states. Extension educators implemented the gardens, collected data, and delivered garden-based lessons in elementary schools in Washington, Iowa, Arkansas, and New York. Additionally, several Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) interns assisted with the research.

Gary Evans is on the Board of Directors for Tompkins County Action, the county’s anti-poverty agency, which administers Head Start, affordable as well as emergency housing, food pantries, energy assistance programs and other federal and state programs targeted to low-income families.

The Cornell Fashion + Textile Collection engages local youth through school programs and internships. Using an anthropological lens, participants explore history by working directly with garments and textiles from the collection.

Janet Loebach is partnering with the Ithaca City School District and 4H programs across New York state to engage youth in participatory design of outdoor spaces.
