Design students tour firms and network in NYC
An immersive journey to a forest canopy in a one-of-a-kind virtual reality space was just one of the memorable moments for the 19 students majoring in design and environmental analysis (DEA) on their visit to Manhattan last month. The students traveled with Nooshin Ahmadi, lecturer in the Department of Human Centered Design (HCD), visiting several design firms as part of her Design Portfolio and Communication class.
“DEA is a multidisciplinary major,” said Ahmadi. “Our graduates

Using XR to enhance design and improve well-being
Six students from the Design and Augmented Intelligence Lab (DAIL) team, directed by Saleh Kalantari, assistant professor in the Department of Human Centered Design, presented posters at the Cornell XR Retreat at Cornell Tech in October.
XR stands for extended reality and is a broad term that includes virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR).
DAIL supports research to develop and analyze human–technology partnerships in the design process and promotes generative design

Students discover opportunities and limitations of AI design
Karl Lagerfeld sitting in a bathtub full of macaroni and cheese. A village of dripping, floating houses reminiscent of a Salvador Dali painting. An electric-pink 3D labyrinth. These are some of the fantastic images generated by students using artificial intelligence (AI) tools in Juan Hinestroza’s Textiles, Apparel and Innovation course. The fanciful images are inviting to the eye, but are they useful? Do they meet the designer’s vision?

Leigh explores ethics and product design in liminal contexts
A camera that refuses to take a bad photo. A radio that only delivers news that aligns with your political taste. A necklace that pressures you into never saying the wrong thing.
Welcome to “Perversion of Interfaces,” a revolving exhibition showcasing prototypes from the Machine Poetics Group, a practice-based research lab directed by Sang Leigh. These wacky, unsettling and thought-provoking items, each powered by an artificial intelligence (AI) core, offer a glimpse at an

Park integrates technology and design to create on-body interfaces
Heat stress from exposure to extreme temperatures is an occupational hazard for firefighters and may put them at risk for cardiovascular disease. In response to this health concern, Heeju Park, associate professor in the Department of Human Centered Design is designing smart fire-gear that monitors heat stroke risk and cardiovascular malfunction through textile-friendly sensors and on-skin cooling technology.
Park shared his research and teaching at the intersection of design, technology, safety, and well-being at the
