(some) shapes of intelligence in the physical world
We welcome you to the showcase of student works from DEA 6400: AI, Embodiment, and Design! These works result from a design exploration of what AI may look like when it leaves the screen—by translating LLMs into tangible objects. You will have a chance to interact with this collection of imaginative, useful, or explorative artifacts. Schedule of these demos are as follows:
Open between Feb 10 - 20 at the Jill Stuart Gallery, Human

Collaboration blends fashion, film studies and spark of fun
On a recent afternoon, four women gathered in the Cornell Fashion + Textile Collection (CF+TC) in Cornell Human Ecology (CHE) to “mine” the collection. The collaborators were preparing an exhibit for the upcoming film screening of “Sunset Boulevard,” and selecting garments that embody main character Norma Desmond, an aging relic from the silent film industry who aspires to recapture her faded glory.
Molly Ryan, director of Cornell Cinema, approached Catherine Kueffer Blumenkamp, associate director of

VR can help older adults feel less lonely and improve cognition
An elderly person visits a Tokyo temple, remarking on the scenery to a companion. The next day, they plant a tree and show a guest around their garden. On other days, they craft a ceramic bowl, build a dresser or stroll down a city street. They do this all without leaving home.
Experiences like these will take place in virtual reality (VR) as part of a five-year project led by Saleh Kalantari, the Lois

Humanist and Integrated Learning and Being: Reflections on Being an Anthropologist among Engineers
Drawing from research and teaching collaborations with colleagues in engineering, robotics, computer science, materials science, as well as community and industry partners, Caitrin Lynch reflects on how and why to question disciplinary silos, reach across to people from vastly different perspectives inside and outside academia, and authentically foreground questions of the impact of work in engineering and design. Caitrin will bring in examples from her projects in design and disability (such as the Engineering at

Engineering Hybrid Nanostructures: Novel Aqueous Routes to Integrate Electrochemically Active Metal Clusters into Carbon Nanomaterial or Polymeric Matrices for Functional Energy Storage and Conversion Materials
Electronic conductivity of porous electrodes by Faradaic and non-Faradaic charge transfer processes impacts the energy and power densities and overall performance of electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices. Carbon nanomaterials constitute an ideal material composite platform for integration with other solid-state electrode materials in power devices. Self-assembly has been recognized as an effective strategy for the bottom–up synthesis of 3D macrostructures using graphene and carbon nanotube as building blocks. The need for chemical precursor vaporization

New CHE grant funds sustainability research
Cornell Human Ecology has awarded six faculty members with grants to support research projects related to sustainability over the 2023-2024 academic year.
The projects range from helping New York State nutrition programs support sustainable food systems, to developing self-powered on-skin computers, to expanding a program that trains retirees as environmental volunteers, reflecting Human Ecology’s interdisciplinary approach to understanding the human experience and helping people thrive.

For Adam Lippes ’95, fashion has always been in the blood
The key to success as a designer is listening to your customer, understanding what she wants and responding accordingly, Adam Lippes ’95 told Cornell Human Ecology students on May 8.
Lippes, the fashion designer behind the successful sportswear label of the same name, was the invited speaker for the Laundress Lecture, an annual event that brings fashion industry experts to campus to share their experiences as both artists and entrepreneurs. The event is supported by
