The minor in Design + Environmental Analysis provides students with an understanding of evidence-based design practices and principles. Students learn design thinking strategies, how research informs the design process, and how they can make a difference to create healthy and sustainable futures by design. The DEA minor is meant to help prepare students to design more holistically in response to today’s complex challenges and opportunities.
This program is offered through the Department of Human Centered Design.
To be considered for the Minor in DEA, students must not be a DEA major.
The minor consists of at least 5 courses, or 15 credits:
Interested students should start by taking the three required core courses:
After completing the core courses, they will submit the Intention to Minor in DEA form.
The minor is self-guided. Some courses require prerequisites so students should plan carefully.
To receive consideration or priority in DEA course enrollment, students must submit the completed Intention to Minor in D+EA form prior to the semester in which they want to enroll. Formally declaring intent to minor in DEA does not guarantee enrollment in DEA courses.
During the semester in which the student plans to graduate, the student must submit a completed copy of the Application to Graduate with a Minor in DEA form to the dea-dus [at] cornell.edu (undergraduate programs coordinator). The deadline for May graduates is March 15; the deadline for December graduates is October 15.
The current version of requirements will be used to evaluate the completion of the minor. If a student has submitted the Intention to Minor form, they can request to use the earlier version of requirements in effect at the time they submitted the form.
After verification by HCD that all requirements for the minor were completed, the student’s college registrar will be notified and their final transcript will indicate that they earned a Minor in DEA. If you have questions, please dea-dus [at] cornell.edu (contact the undergraduate programs coordinator).
To complete the minor, students must take three core courses and two thematics. Some courses may not be offered annually due to sabbatical leave and other department circumstances. Verify course offerings online and through summer session.
