Designers in Residence offer fresh perspectives and new challenges
Amid a riot of colors and textures, faculty and students from Cornell Human Ecology’s Department of Human Centered Design (HCD) marvel at the swatches and garments on display in the MVR 1250 gallery.
Knitwear experts Thijs Verhaar and Lyske Gais spent two weeks embedded in HCD as the 2024 Designers in Residence. During the residency, they attended classes; hosted workshops, a gallery exhibit and a lecture; and made themselves available to faculty and students.

Intercampus symposium brings together Cornell researchers studying metabolic health
Diabetes, obesity, and metabolic diseases are complex health problems and important threats to human health. Ensuring optimal metabolic health requires multidisciplinary solutions.
On Sept. 11 and 12, a cross-campus symposium brought together nearly 100 Cornell researchers from the Ithaca Campus and the Weill Cornell Medicine Campus in New York City to catalyze the kind of interdisciplinary collaborations necessary to address this growing health challenge.

100 scholarships to celebrate CHE’s 100th year
On the eve of the college’s 100th anniversary celebration, an alumnae-led fundraising initiative in Cornell Human Ecology (CHE) has achieved a milestone. Jung-hye Shin named chair of the Department of Human Centered Design
Jung-hye Shin, a design researcher and academic leader, has been named professor and chair of the Cornell Human Ecology (CHE) Department of Human Centered Design (HCD).
Shin comes to Cornell from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she served as chair and professor in the Department of Design Studies and as faculty director of design at the Center for Design and Material Culture.
For Shin, this is a return to the Hill. She earned

HumEcathon takes on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
The College of Human Ecology held its fourth annual HumEcathon, a hackathon-style design challenge, on May 1, bringing together 27 undergraduates to work in multidisciplinary teams on this year’s topic of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives on campus.
Organized by the Dean’s Undergraduate Advisory Council (DUAC), the event was inspired by an information session for prospective students that had stuck with the members of DUAC.

Sander Kersten named new director of Division of Nutritional Sciences
Sander Kersten Ph.D. ’97, an experienced molecular nutrition researcher and academic leader, has been named the new director of the Division of Nutritional Sciences, which is shared by the College of Human Ecology (CHE) and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS).
Kersten, who was also named the Schleifer Family Professor in CHE, comes to Cornell from Wageningen University in the Netherlands, where he was most recently professor and chair of the Division

Student Contribution Projects make positive change
The Contribution Project is once again funding student ideas to make the world a better place. Of the 100 students selected for the 2023 awards, 17 are in Cornell Human Ecology. Their projects range from improving campus gathering spaces, to providing toiletries to homeless people in Ithaca, to encouraging teenagers to help make blankets for children in South Africa.
