Putting people in the centre of design: what does this really mean?
Modern forward-thinking design people often put people at the centre of their design work, and talk about "co-creation", "codesign" and similar terms, but I think there is a challenge to be made that the relationship between the "co-designer" and the "designer" might not be quite as evenly balanced as it should be. This talk is based on work we are doing at the UCL PEARL (Person-Environment-Activity Research Laboratory) to understand how exactly the "person" can

The Hand in the Design Process
Melissa Conroy is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Human Centered Design who specializes in knitwear design and cross-disciplinary creative collaboration. She will discuss the differences and intersections between the disciplines of art, craft and design with an emphasis on understanding how the disciplines of art and craft can benefit the design process using hands-on processes.

Rethink the Design and Manufacturing of Fibers and Textiles for Functional Applications
Fibers are ubiquitous in daily life, from clothing and electrical cables to optical fibers and even biological systems like mussels. Beyond these conventional roles, fibers and textiles emerge as key enablers in technologies such as wearable electronics, robotics, clean energy, and water purification. Unlocking these advanced applications requires innovations across materials, design, manufacturing, and system integration. In this seminar, Dr. Shou will share some of their progress on scalable tactile textiles for human–environment interactions, advanced

Designing for Dignity
Jennie Joseph, founder and president of Commonsense Childbirth and creator of the JJ Way, will discuss her model of evidence-based maternity care delivering readily accessible, patient-centered, culturally congruent care to people in "materno-toxic zones."
Commonsense Childbirth operates a perinatal training division, a clinical division, a national Midwifery school and the National Perinatal Task Force, a grassroots organization whose mission is the elimination of racial disparities in maternal child health in the USA.

What Roles Will Humans Play in the Future of Data Annotation?
Talk Abstract:
Large language models (LLMs) have rapidly and impressively taken over many tasks once handled by human annotators in constructing text datasets. But does this mean we no longer need humans in the annotation loop? What roles should humans play in future data annotation pipelines? In this talk, I will present two recent studies that explore the evolving role of humans in the landscape of text data annotation. First, we ask whether a well-designed

Designing a Systems Architecture for Biobased Manufacturing with Industrial Hemp
Industrial hemp is standing at a threshold between legacy and innovation. Oregon State University’s (OSU) Global Hemp Innovation Center (GHIC) is advancing a model for how plant-based systems can transform the future of materials, design, and advanced manufacturing. This presentation introduces a “gene-to-plant-to-field-to-factory-to-fashion” framework that uses a systems approach linking molecular genetics, agronomy, processing technology, and apparel design into an integrated biobased manufacturing ecosystem with the research, engagement, and educational components needed to support it
