Valeria Savtyreva is a Master’s student in the Division of Nutritional Sciences on the Dietetics track. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Science, with a minor in Biological Science, from Rutgers University. In 2020, she began working at a bariatric practice, an experience that sparked her interest in the relationship between nutrition and metabolic health. As an undergraduate, Valeria conducted research on the connections between the gut microbiome, metabolism, and women’s health. At Cornell, her current research focuses on brown adipose tissue and its role in metabolic status. She aims to become a registered dietitian and pursue a research career, using her findings to develop and translate evidence-based nutrition therapies into clinical practice.

Valeria is currently conducting research in the Barrow Lab of Molecular Nutrition under the mentorship of Dr. Joeva Barrow. Her primary project focuses on identifying biomarkers and regulatory factors associated with brown adipose tissue to better understand its biology and role in metabolic health. In addition, she is contributing to a study on Nutrient Sequencing (how altering the order in which different food groups are consumed) affects blood glucose responses and other metabolic markers.
