As a basic scientist by training, my research has initially included both pre-clinical and human interventions, but since the last ~20 years I have focused my research on human translational intervention studies. Currently I work at the German Diabetes Center in Düsseldorf, Germany. At CHE I aim to contribute to the further stimulation of the translational relevance of the excellent metabolic investigations, and provide my expertise and ongoing research on collaborative projects. In particular, I will collaborate on topics including mitochondrial function in muscle, adipose tissue and liver, the effects of prolonged fasting on (human) metabolism, exercise and nutritional effects on inflammation and energy metabolism, brown adipose tissue as well as the effect of weight loss on metabolic health.

Over the last 30 years, my research has focused on the role of energy and substrate metabolism in the development of metabolic diseases, such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and particularly have been interested in understanding how lifestyle, including nutrition and physical activity can help to prevent or treat those diseases. In particular, I have been interested in understanding the (molecular) mechanisms underlying the effects of nutrition, exercise and cold exposure on muscle and liver metabolism, with a special interest in mitochondrial function. As a basic scientist by training, my research has initially included both pre-clinical and human interventions, but since the last ~20 years I have focused my research on human translational intervention studies. Given my strong interest in understanding underlying mechanisms, I have initiated and chaired several large international consortia where pre-clinical and clinical studies were combined to cover the full translational spectrum. Currently, my research activities focus on topics such as mitochondrial function in muscle, adipose tissue and liver, the effects of prolonged fasting on (human) metabolism, exercise and nutritional effects on inflammation and energy metabolism as well as the effect of weight loss on metabolic health. I hope to expand this work through collaborative work at the division of Nutritional Sciences of Cornell University.
