Come and celebrate and enjoy an interactive community youth and young adult art exhibit centered on LGBTQ+ chosen family.
Research conducted here at Cornell University and lived experience alike show that affirmation and connection are essential to well-being. Chosen families provide safe spaces to be fully seen and accepted, nurturing resilience, joy and self-worth. They help buffer against discrimination and loneliness, while fostering creativity, community and pride. For many queer and trans people, chosen family is both an anchor and a source of hope.
Inside the letters that spell “Chosen Family,” you’re invited to write the names of those who have shaped your life in meaningful ways. They might be friends, mentors, partners, neighbors, or community members, anyone who feels like family to you. Take a seat and a moment to think about what chosen family means to you, how it nurtures belonging, resilience and joy.
While the idea of chosen family holds special meaning within LGBTQ+ communities, everyone is welcome to contribute. We all build families in different ways — through love, care, and connection.
